How to Split Fuel on a Road Trip with Friends: Formula, Calculator and the Driver’s Share

The formula, a calculator, whether the driver pays, tolls, two cars and a passenger who only rides part of the way.

Fuel is the one road-trip cost that everybody shares and nobody wants to count at a petrol station. The maths is simple; the arguments are about the driver.

Short answer: fuel = kilometres × consumption ÷ 100 × price per litre. Add tolls and parking and split among everyone in the car. Whether the driver pays an equal share is a convention — agree before you leave.

A worked example

1,000 km there and back, 8 L/100 km, 65 RUB per litre: 80 L, 5,200 RUB. Tolls and parking 2,400 RUB — 7,600 RUB in total. Four people including the driver: 1,900 RUB each. If the driver doesn’t pay: 7,600 ÷ 3 ≈ 2,533 RUB per passenger.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the driver pay for fuel?

Both conventions exist. On a shared holiday the driver usually pays an equal share; when the driver is doing everyone a favour with their own car, passengers often cover the driver’s share. Agree before you leave.

How do you estimate the fuel cost of a trip?

Litres = kilometres × consumption per 100 km ÷ 100; cost = litres × price per litre. 1,000 km at 8 L/100 km is 80 L; at 65 RUB per litre that is 5,200 RUB.

What about two cars?

On a shared trip, pool the fuel and tolls of both cars and split them among everyone — which car you ended up in is chance.
