Two lines on a restaurant receipt confuse everyone: the service charge and the tip. They're not the same thing, and splitting them fairly in a group needs a rule. Here are the formulas, plus the reverse trick for "wait, what percent was that tip?"
What the charge actually covers
There is no single standard — the venue defines it and must describe it where the charge is announced. It usually means everything that is not the food: waiting staff, greeting, table setting, cleaning. Crucially it is not a tip: the money is the restaurant's, and it need not reach the server who looked after you.
Service charge vs tip
- Service charge — a surcharge (usually 10–15%) the venue adds automatically and prints on the menu. It is the restaurant's revenue.
- Tip — voluntary, at your discretion, addressed to a person. If a service charge is already on the bill, an extra tip is optional.
Are you obliged to pay it?
In Russia, no. Adding payments to a bill without the guest's consent is treated as imposing unrequested services under article 16 of the consumer protection law, and the consumer watchdog has confirmed that guests may ask for the line to be removed — or claim a refund if they already paid. The rules tightened further on 1 September 2025. In practice most venues remove it on request. Rules differ by country, so check locally. The reverse-tip formula
To find what percentage a tip was, subtract the bill from the total and divide by the bill:
tip % = (total − bill) / bill × 100
Worked example: the bill is 3640, the total with tip is 4321. Then (4321 − 3640) / 3640 = 681 / 3640 = 0.187 — the tip was about 18.7%.
How the service charge is calculated
It's a percentage of the pre-service total. On a 3000 bill with a 10% service charge, the charge is 300 and you pay 3300. Because it scales with the whole bill, the fair way to split it is proportionally to each person's order — exactly like tips.
