March 8 Gift Collection: How Much to Chip In and What to Write

International Women's Day is a fixed date in Russian offices and schools — here is the budget maths and ready-made announcements for a work or parent chat.

Published:

March 8 collections have one structural quirk: the people collecting are not the people receiving. In a typical office the men collect for the women, which makes the arithmetic depend on the gender split of the team — and makes the announcement itself a little awkward to write.

Short answer: announce between 20 and 25 February, budget 500–1500 RUB per recipient, divide by the number of contributors, and keep the amount in line with what was collected for 23 February two weeks earlier.

How Much to Collect

The formula: budget per recipient × number of recipients ÷ number of contributors. In a team of 12 with 8 women and 4 men, a 700 RUB gift each means 1400 RUB per man — which is why the per-gift budget has to be set before anything is announced.

Timing: Mind the 23 February Overlap

The two holidays are thirteen days apart, and in most Russian teams both are marked. Announcing the March 8 collection before 20 February means two money requests inside a fortnight. Either keep the amounts comparable, or agree on a single holiday fund in January and collect once.
